things about the seaside

We've spent a week at the seaside, and I'm missing it.  Missing the sky and the clouds.

All things stripey. The seaside is clearly the place that stripes belong. A stripey dress or t- shirt just doesn't have the same cachet at home.

Missing the light in the morning, and the promise of a dip in the sea in the afternoon. Those delicious first steps when you wonder whether you really want to cool down quite so much, and then after a few minutes that delicious feeling of moving water all round you.

Missing the promise of adventure, even if we did nothing about it.

Missing dog spotting and people spotting. This year we were looking out for men in pink shorts (score 5) and trousers (score 10); any shade of pink from strawberry to raspberry to rhubarb crumble. Missing the quick crossword on the beach and a game of Linkee in the evening; keeping cool with Arctic Chill and Hypothermia and Christmas Pudding ice cream.

Don't get me wrong. It's nice to be home, at least once the bags have been unpacked, the cats fed and the allotment watered. But that spending time somewhere completely different, creating short term comforting routines that will only last a week with people you want to spend time with is so very, very refreshing - and one of the best birthday gifts ever.

Now that looks good.
Surprised trousers beat shorts.

We went to Aldeburgh in Suffolk. My friend invited us to stay in a place she had rented which looked across to the sea. It was a birthday treat - along with the daily ice cream. Although there are lots of places selling fish further along the beach, I think those boats on the beach were really there as a photo op having been painted up by someone who lives in the town!

Oh yes! Far more pink shorts than trousers. We should have included stripey tops at 2 points a pop.

Ah, a week beside the sea, the perfect birthday present. Love how, on holiday, the usual timetable goes out the window and the pace changes. Never played the 'I spy a man in pink' game, though.

Just back from six days in Shropshire and Derbyshire youth hostels and am on my fifth load of washing (well there are five of us). For a cheap break near Aldeburgh we have stayed at Blaxhall Youth Hostel a few times - just near Snape Maltings. Lovely part of the world.

It all sounds utterly and absolutely perfect. Three weeks off coming up here for the Mr, but no chance of going away together ... too many commitments re. the Aged Ps. I was thinking I might get a load of sand dumped in the garden and some deckchairs to recreate the mood though!

And I thought that was Aldeborough. We used to visit friends in Framlingham every summer and spent a lot of time on the Suffolk Coast. Walberswick is a favourite. It's just not been possibly recently though.

Glad you had such a good time x

Such a nice area, one of the few I have thought "Wonder if I could live here?" and thought yes, I could. If only I could have afforded to..... Glad you had such a pleasant break!
