after the frost

In Norwich at the weekend, we mooched around the market and saw some splendid  - and expensive - forced rhubarb.  Despite the temptation to buy some, practicality got the better of me and  I left it glowing pinkly on the stall among the caulis and greens.

Down at the allotment the next day after our first winter frost we found this pushing up from beneath the mighty feed of autumn compost - the first fragile leaves of our own rhubarb.

There's a rhubarb forcer around somewhere, and it's about time it was put to work.

Stratford Morrisons have had really good rhubarb in stock in the last week from the rhubarb triangle (it is something of a rule in this house that the rhubarb has to be from our garden or from Yorkshire). Expensive but the best crumble I've made in a while. Always think that growing rhubarb and cavolo nero is worth it for the leaves alone, let alone the edible end product.

Oh how lovely to be able to force your own rhubarb! I noticed yesterday that the Yorkshire stuff has arrived in our local shop but as you say it is pretty pricey.

It's really feeling spring like all of a sudden, then the snow will come and spoil it.
Off to check my rhubarb..

I love Rhubarb and it grows well here ! but for now it's hiding under a thick cosy layer of snow safely tucked up until Mid May :0)

I could have sworn I'd left a comment here already about the joys of rhubarb ... we intend to try Jojo's rhubarb and blood orange compote just as soon as we can come by some :)
