I'm ashamed to say that I forgot to buy a birthday card, but I did remember to make a cake*. I think she liked it, though it did make her look like tiny.
She has to remind me every now and then that she is an old lady because sometimes I forget that too.
I am so chuffed that it was Granny's Fruit Cake, and I'm sure my grannies would both have loved the idea too! Tsk, who needs cards when you have a cake made with love?
'She is not one to be free with praise': that did make me laugh. And it made me think of both my grannies!! I am already practising hard so that someone will be able to say that about me when I'm 80!
Just catching up here, with your lovely bathing post, and the veg, and this very special birthday. May there be many more in each other's company still to come.
Splendid cake. Am in awe of the icing. Will try the cake recipe as have been looking for a good fruit cake. I always forget how old my mum is too, she is always telling me off about it. But it's hard because they are just your mum! Hope you had a lovely day xu
Wonderful picture of your mum! Have very much enjoyed catching up on your blog entries, particularly that one about bathing. We had a bath just like the onr you described with the hinged lid. It was in the kitchen, but would not be alloed nowadays.
Much better than a card. Lovely photo, very elegant. I was talking to a friend the other day who had his 84 year old aunt staying with him. She still plays tennis regularly but as she said to him 'Only doubles, darling!' I think 80 is the new 50...
A belated happy birthday to the lovely lady and a huge thank you for sharing the Knit Nurse's recipe. I made it yesterday. I've never measured in cups, or a small dish in my case, nor boiled before baking before so a couple of 1sts for me. Cake was absolutely delicious and very very moist. Hubby insisted he had the bit that had been left behind, only ever done that for his mums cakes! Did I say it was moist, it was very very moist ha ha I shall probably make, at least, 1 of these for WI bakes next year.

My mum thought it was a very good cake indeed, and she is not one to be free with praise! It is one of my favourite recipes.

Elegant with age.
A really beautiful photo of a beautiful woman.
You can see exactly what you are going to look like at 80. And given that your mum looks so wonderful, you have nothing to fear.
Best wishes,
Joan

I can see the family resemblance. That looks to be a most fitting cake for such a special celebration. Save me a piece!
That is a really lovely photo ...
Thank you for sharing and Happy Birthday wishes from over here too :0)
With a cake like that , who needs a card ? She's obviously delighted with it !

Brilliant idea you suggest on Esther's Boring Garden Blog. (The blinds.) Have mentioned it on Twitter. Hope that's ok.
